Making Up Time

Get slathering. Image: Sunshine City
Do you want to know a fact I learned this week? Over the Christmas season women wear 3 times as much make up as usual. That's thrice as much! According to the Daily Mail women are: “slathering 12 products on to their faces before going on a night out.” Slathering! The usual amount of products women slap on is 4, for a night out the product number climbs to 8.

Debenhams, who bravely undertook this research, said the poll showed the basic 4 products of foundation, mascara, lip gloss and blusher make up the basic lady routine. Come Christmas these products are augmented with bronzer, eye liner, eye shadow, lipstick, false eyelashes, glitter, highlighter and setting spray. Although I suspect setting spray is a big fat lie and women have been taking tips from Snog, Marry Avoid and setting their glittery faces with hairspray.

Ah yes, the Christmas season. It's all office parties, mulled wine in the middle of the day and body glitter, but there comes a point, ladies, when this all has to stop. No, that point is not January as you might think, but the age of 59. Which, arguably, is the January of life.

A poll, commissioned by Nurture Replenish Skincare has found that in order to age gracefully women, not men (obviously– get down with your bad selves you fine wines you) should overhaul their style and go for a pared down look. It's the least you can do if you aren't going to conveniently disappear.

According to the poll, which surveyed 2000 women, by the age of 41 if any leather trousers or mini skirts are found in your wardrobe they should be confiscated, or handed in in some kind of amnesty drive. By 43 you can stop with all that fake tan, madam, and heavy eye liner. And a third of those surveyed are here to tell you that bleached hair on the over 50s is unflattering.
All women are allowed a ration of red lipstick though, because it is timeless. 74% plan to avoid cosmetic surgery, by keeping up with a (Nurture Replenish Skincare) natural beauty routine. 59% of those surveyed reckoned they looked younger than they actually are, although there's no record of who answered the survey whilst wearing leather trousers.

It's the least you can do if you aren't going to conveniently disappear.

Older women who were deemed acceptable were Dame Judi Dench, Nigella Lawson and Joanna Lumley, Lulu (who I have met!) and Twiggy (who I have also met and is not as tall as I thought she would be). Cyndi Lauper, who is 59 and should be overhauling her look right this minute, and Madonna were not seen to be ageing gracefully. It seems a shame that the idea of what is acceptable for women gets so narrow post 40.

Whether they are on the approved or unapproved list, these older women in the public eye are demonstrating a great example for the younger generation – who are increasingly alarmed by the idea of ageing should look at the respect all these women demand and be concentrating on that, rather than counting their crows feet.

In spite of the poll's results Nurture Replenish Skincare chose to sit on the aging fence, though with their legs dangling over the Older Women Know Thy Place side and said: “Many women will be able to relate to these findings. It’s true that as you get older you may have to adapt your look but every woman will face this stage at different times in her life...What’s important to remember is to be yourself and don’t be forced to look a certain way because you feel you have to.”

Now, everybody wrinkly hug.

I think people are still so quick to judge women on their appearance, like it's their most important asset. I think your image is an expression of you and so no everyone is going to like it. Do what you want make-up wise and wear what you want! People rarely go wiiiiiiild with their looks anyway!
