Hard to Bare

A study by Superdrug has been released that tells us on average women wait 4 weeks and one day before revealing their bare face to their new partner/casual lover/on again off again beau. Of the 2000 women, aged between 18 and 55, surveyed most said that being seen without make-up made them feel vulnerable, less confident and less attractive. Superdrug's head of beauty Sarah Sharp commented that: "The research indicates that for many women wearing make-up isn't just a way of looking attractive, it's much more than that, it's a way to be confident and project an image... Many women consider going au natural in front of a new partner quite a serious step, they are exposing themselves completely..."

60% of women wait until they are sure their partner likes them enough before going without make up in front of them. During a date 6 out of 10 women will think nothing of faking cystitis* and nipping to the loo to reapply her make-up.

Also, remember that scene in Bridesmaids where Kristen Wiig crawls gingerly out of bed to clean her teeth and apply mascara without waking John Hamm, to give the impression she wakes up fresh faced and breathed naturally to her undeserving and unsatisfying lover? An amusing exaggeration I thought, pretty usual says Superdrug. Many a lady hops out of bed to freshen up before her partner wakes apparently. When I wake up I can't open one of my eyes for some time, (I don't know why, it's just an endearing trait) so I am impressed with the people who do this.

Yeah I said it, impressed.
Oh but this is a feminist blog, oh crap, oh PATRIARCHY! I meant to say something about not wearing a mask of foundation and to value who you really are - which is your bare face. Or bear face if it's Children in Need time and we're being cutesy to raise money for a good cause.

We can scrub our faces with a Simple cleansing wipe until our skin is red raw, we will still be vulnerable

Everywhere I have seen this study posted I have seen this presented with a slightly desparing tone. I bet 6 out of 10 men wear clean pants for the first week or so of a relationship, or refrain from wearing any with cartoon characters (I have a friend who, each time I have caught a glimpse of his pants peeking out from his jeans, appears to wear nothing but silken Bart Simpson pants. Were he trying to seduce me I wonder if those pants would be replaced..?) emblazoned on them? Oh but guys you should be yourselves! If you like Bart Simpson that much then SO BE IT.

On Jezebel.com Callie Beusman assured us: "...womyn of the world, let's get this out of the way. Everybody together: you're worth so much more than your appearance. While it's great that many women feel extremely self-assured through the power of cosmetics, to give the makeup all the credit is really selling oneself short. It's selling oneself shorter than short. It is selling one into a ditch filled with garbage bags and other refuse."

The coverage of this story regarding...coverage sparked many a comment boasting of bare faces, or a preference for bare faces. Well, for those who glory to the point of boasting in no make-up, bully for you, allow me to high 5 your fresh face. And men, oh men who prefer no make-up. Hetero ladies I tell you, 'ware the man who says you don't need 'all that make-up' for he is negging you. And he needs to quit his negging.

Let's get this out of the way, wearing make-up is not a signifier of low self-esteem. Wearing make-up while getting to know someone you think is hot is not some betrayal to yourself, them or feminism. It's more or less the same as I would never go to work in my pyjamas or meet someone for a date without a bra on.

I hate this creepy form of feminism that won't be happy until my face is raw. We can scrub our faces with a Simple cleansing wipe until our skin is red raw, we will still be vulnerable to exploitation, unequal pay, rape. If you don't want women to be judged on appearance here's a tip - don't judge women on appearance!

Your face looks great when you do whatever the hell you want with it.
