Also, remember that scene in Bridesmaids where Kristen Wiig crawls gingerly out of bed to clean her teeth and apply mascara without waking John Hamm, to give the impression she wakes up fresh faced and breathed naturally to her undeserving and unsatisfying lover? An amusing exaggeration I thought, pretty usual says Superdrug. Many a lady hops out of bed to freshen up before her partner wakes apparently. When I wake up I can't open one of my eyes for some time, (I don't know why, it's just an endearing trait) so I am impressed with the people who do this.
Yeah I said it, impressed.
Oh but this is a feminist blog, oh crap, oh PATRIARCHY! I meant to say something about not wearing a mask of foundation and to value who you really are - which is your bare face. Or bear face if it's Children in Need time and we're being cutesy to raise money for a good cause. | We can scrub our faces with a Simple cleansing wipe until our skin is red raw, we will still be vulnerable |
On Jezebel.com Callie Beusman assured us: "...womyn of the world, let's get this out of the way. Everybody together: you're worth so much more than your appearance. While it's great that many women feel extremely self-assured through the power of cosmetics, to give the makeup all the credit is really selling oneself short. It's selling oneself shorter than short. It is selling one into a ditch filled with garbage bags and other refuse."
The coverage of this story regarding...coverage sparked many a comment boasting of bare faces, or a preference for bare faces. Well, for those who glory to the point of boasting in no make-up, bully for you, allow me to high 5 your fresh face. And men, oh men who prefer no make-up. Hetero ladies I tell you, 'ware the man who says you don't need 'all that make-up' for he is negging you. And he needs to quit his negging.
Let's get this out of the way, wearing make-up is not a signifier of low self-esteem. Wearing make-up while getting to know someone you think is hot is not some betrayal to yourself, them or feminism. It's more or less the same as I would never go to work in my pyjamas or meet someone for a date without a bra on.
I hate this creepy form of feminism that won't be happy until my face is raw. We can scrub our faces with a Simple cleansing wipe until our skin is red raw, we will still be vulnerable to exploitation, unequal pay, rape. If you don't want women to be judged on appearance here's a tip - don't judge women on appearance!
Your face looks great when you do whatever the hell you want with it.
