Harassment Through a Lens

I'm a white, well-educated, able-bodied, middle class male, which puts me in a very privileged position in society. I'm aware of this, it's given me lots of opportunities that others don't get and shielded me from the abuse and harassment a lot of people receive. When I was asked to write an article giving a male-perspective on how I feel about the Cards Against Street Harassment I was dubious if I could do it - it certainly takes me out of my comfort zone of writing about comic book characters.

More importantly it's not something I've ever really encountered (I've had drunks and teenagers shout abuse at me on occasion, but that doesn't really compare as they certainly didn't think they were complimenting me), nor have I witnessed my friends do it as I chose long ago not to be friends with misogynistic wankers.

Having watched some of the videos I really don't think there's any question that the men are arseholes of the highest order, but I feel her approach to dealing with them is flawed and potentially dangerous.
Secretly recording someone with the express purpose to put the video online so they can be abused and mocked, however repellent they are, and deserving of abuse, is descending to their level.

It certainly won't change their behaviour - if they discover themselves online it is more likely to re-enforce their repellent attitude towards woman

It drags us all down rather than trying to fix the underlying problems of woman not being perceived as equal and worthy of respect.

It certainly won't change their behaviour - if they discover themselves online it is more likely to re-enforce their repellent attitude towards woman (after all they've proven themselves to be devious by damaging their good reputation) than change them into decent humans. And it has the potential to end horribly if someone notices they are being recorded, or recognises Lindsey which, considering these videos are recorded on her daily commute, is increasingly likely to happen as the web page grows in fame.

All in all I think this is a poor way to deal with repellent behaviour. Society needs to change, but I'd much rather it was through positive behaviour and re-education rather than a race to the bottom
