Friday 5...Tech Magazine Covers

It has been announced that the UK's biggest selling gadget magazine Stuff will no longer feature covers that show a girl in a bikini. This is because often gadgets tend to run a bit hot and if you're in a bikini it increases your risk of laptop thigh burn. Another reason cited by Stuff is that its readership demographic has shifted and is now 40% of their readers are women. The magazine ran sales tests on the April, May and June issues with 20% of the print run featuring 'non-girl' covers in four regions in the UK. These covers proved to be far more popular than the girl covers.

But what will Stuff magazine feature on their covers now to draw in the masses? What do men AND women like looking at if not women in bikinis? We have had a think and come up with these suggestions...

1. Frankly the only thing on the front cover should be a big QR code that you can scan to read the magazine for free on the internet. They say the era of "lads' mags" is over, but as far as I'm concerned they can drop the word "lads'" from that statement. Especially for magazines dealing in technology - why would you pay the best part of a fiver to see pictures of a gadget you want to buy when you can go online and watch streaming videos for free? Gareth

2. Pandas. Baby pandas (bikini-clad if the focus groups deem it necessary) holding gadgets. Or otters, or mini pigs, or ceiling cat, or any of the other animals that have been proven to drive the internet wild with desire. Open the heart and the wallet will follow. F1Kate

3. Remember when The IT Crowd did the sexy geek calendar? Yeah. Do that. OR if in doubt use a pug. In glasses and a tie. Squeamish Kate

4. Stuff magazine is right to change its tacky and dated covers, everyone has an electric toothbrush and knows how to use it and propping it between a pair of boobs is not (as fun as it may be) the manufacturer's intended use. Ok that maybe be a made up example but the need to catch up with the most popular things on the Internet for men AND women is real. By this I obviously mean memes! A different one, possibly with a cat in it, every month with have people rolling around the newsagents in a fit of uncontrollable laugher before they've even picked Stuff off the shelf. 5. Beards are sexy. These magazine sell tech. Therefore, what we really need is lots of photographs of stereos, TVs, tablets and high-end cameras adorned with those sexy, sexy beards. Squeamish Louise
