Squeamish Bikini is a year old! High 5s and Friday 5s all round! It's been a year of fluctuating house styles, questioned feminism, trolls, spam and sea creatures. A constant throughout all of this has been the weekly little whale that has been so kind as to offer up 5 things a week. It's been inspired by current affairs, feminist triumphs, misheard lyrics and personal bugbears.
On our birthday (OK our birthday was Wednesday but we had to keep with both tradition and alliteration – Wednesday 5 has no flow) we have decided it's a time for reflection, or stock take if you will. We have all browsed the archives and chosen our favourite Friday 5s, which has evolved from a Squeamish Kate and Louise collaboration to a Squeamish family listings feature. 1. In our house, we have a pedantry jar. The most pedantic member of the household is currently being trained out of their proclivity through a system of fines that buy the rest of us takeaways. It's a great system. But I must confess to a little linguistic pedantry of my own, which is why I loved the Abused Words Friday 5. Whenever I hear people saying less instead of fewer, it hurts my soul. Then there are those ghastly words - burglarized, historicity - that Americans made up to replace perfectly adequate words already in existence (burgled, historic/historical). Part of me dies a little whenever I encounter them. Sure, language is constantly evolving. Allegedly. But as our Friday 5 proved, maybe we've confused linguistic evolution for devolution? I call it The Origin of the Specious.

2. I'd like to highlight the Friday 5 Public Transport Rules of Etiquette. Because people still haven’t learned from this, especially my entry in it. Preparation is still key. Gareth
3. I believe I made it clear in the Ohrwurm Friday 5 that I am not crazy about The Friday 5, but according to the SB statistics and actual real life feedback it's found a special place in some people's hearts. What I do like about the Friday 5 is all the little facts I learn from/about the other Squeamish writers every week. Childhood memories have been dredged up, impressive sidekick character knowledge displayed and a terrible affliction for confusing LA LA LA with NA NA NA. Squeamish Kate
4. With age comes wisdom or just more mistakes about fashion, politics and mainly hair! Back in 1995 while a cooed over Casper the friendly (boy-)ghosts golden blonde curtains I was rocking a far more severe 90s hairstyle. This is why my favorite Friday 5 harks back to the not-so-rose-tinted memories of the 90s - Things We Believed In The 90s. I believed my hair looked good. Alas I was wrong! Squeamish Nicola
5. Our lovely whale has seen us through a strange old year here at Squeamish Towers. She's helped us explore holidays, nostalgia and self-improvement.
So my vote has to go to one of our earliest Friday 5s - moustaches! I love a good 'tache at the best of times, but thanks to the squeamish whale (with a little help from Kate's artisitic prowess), now we all know what she looks like rocking a twirl 'tache and a monocle.
