Friday 5...Contraception Myths

We've all heard them. In the playground, in the PSHE classroom, in the Daily Mail. Contraception myths. A study recently found that no, free contraception does not turn people into sex-crazed beasts. They just have more responsible sex. Ah, where would we be without contraception myths? They can vary from the mildly plausible to the outrageous. They'd be hilarious if for every sex educator offering free contraception there weren't more people who believe these myths. OK some of them are hilarious. Which is why we have shared some of the best ones we've heard...

1. Contraception myths are amazing. You can't get pregnant the first time, or if it's your period, or if you're pregnant and breastfeeding. And you definitely can't get pregnant if you didn't come, or if you came too hard. In fact, the only way you can get pregnant is by taking it up the arse. SCIENCE. F1Kate

2. The 'Catholic Method.' Does. Not. Work. Pre-cum was a dangerous invisible form of semen that jumped out the pages of J17 magazine and up into my uterus. I am always surprised when I talk to a friend and it turns out that they are still relying on the good ol' pull out technique, it's best left for those who like babies. Squeamish Nicola

3. I think a lot of these myths are the result of old wives tales, adults trying to avoid the subject and sexy chinese whispers. An ex-missionary once told me they'd provided condoms to a remote village but their squeamish explanation of how to use them resulted in women and their partners quizzing the missionaries on why, when they had carefully placed the condom on an upright stick next to the bed, had a pregnancy come about? 4. Lots of people believe that double bagging (using 2 condoms at the same time) is doubly effective against pregnancy and STDs.Don't do this! They can rub against each other and cause holes, making them much less safe! One condom at a time is plenty. Squeamish Louise

5. My favourite is that kebabs can prevent pregnancy. A 2008 study of 1000 women in the UK showed that there's still a belief that chocolate, crisps and kebabs all prevent pregnancy. Lets hope they were taking them orally! I think we've found the reason the UK has the highest rates of both unplanned pregnancy and obesity in Europe.
