Friday 5... Teen Films

The whale looks like a total betty in that outfit
We’ve checked the weather for this weekend. It’s going to be rubbish and dreary tonight and tomorrow. Which is perfect weather for staying in and watching a film without feeling guilty that you’re wasting the best part of the day. Whilst you’re lounging around doing nothing on the settee you might as well complete the return to your teen years and watch some films with a pubescent narrative. At least then we can all feel glad our teenage years are over…and wonder if it’s true that all American High Schoolers  have clear skin.

1.  Clueless (1995) – Squeamish Kate can still recite huge swathes of script from this teen film and is still holding out for the revolving wardrobe. Re-watching this might prove rather alarming because the big running joke was teenagers with credit cards, pagers and mobile phones. Now the joke is HA-HA PAGERS?! Fortunately we can still help the legacy of the long sock live on, here's how!  "It wasn't until later I realised how much of it had gone straight over my pre-teen head, kind of like Grease."

2.  Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)  gets Squeamish Louise’s vote. Kirstie Alley and Denise Richards chewing the scenery as the nastiest mother/daughter beauty queen combination, Kirsten Dunst tap-dancing round a morgue, one of the greatest dance routines on film and a surprising number of explosions make this the funniest and most memorable beauty contest film you're ever likely to see

3.  But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) Squeamish Kate’s mother rented this out for her, “make of that what you will, I’d never heard of it but it’s still one of my favourite films – and it has Jen Lindley in it!” Yeah most of the characters are stereotypes but that’s half the joke. If you’re looking for something that features a goth, gay rehab camp and cheerleading, though not in that order, then this film’s for you.

4.  Mean Girls (2004) Whilst travelling alone around New Zealand Squeamish Kate got into the habit of going to the cinema on the first night in any new town. “It was a choice between Mean Girls and an Adam Sandler film so Mean Girls it was, I then spent the next month or so watching Mean Girls all over Australia, it just gets the crux of the mysteries of girl friendship, plus I love Janice”. What’s alarming about Mean Girls is how quickly it’s aged. Just as it jars to see people light up in bars on TV, or you wonder why an 80s horror victim doesn’t just use her mobile, watching Mean Girls now you think…I am so glad Regina did not have Facebook.

5. Bring It On! (2000)  Another cheerleading film worth of our squeamish attentions, Squeamish Louise has a confession to make, “I feel like I should be honest here. This film stars Eliza Dushku as a sarcastic wisecracker who only joins her new school's cheerleading squad because there's no gymnastics team where she can flaunt her amazing ability to back-flip across a room. If nothing else happened in the whole film, that would be enough for me and my massive fannery of Dushku.” Luckily, the film also features some fantastic dialogue and laughs, even if the main story is a little heavy-handed…

Did we miss any out you think should be added? Comment and tell us why...

I have to add Empire Records! That has some great lines in it too - 'You get smarted the shorter your skirt gets' 'Well you get smarter the shorter your hair gets so it's a good thing you went with that' The girls recently shaved her head - teen angst is a killer!

I only saw that for the first time recently and I wasn't blown away by it as promised, I think I would have been had I seen it at 13 but I think the Speed addiction would have passed me by...

I don't know if you'd class it as a teen movie - I certainly would - but one of my favourite movies is Dazed and Confused. It may be set in the '70s, but in every non-era aspect it IS the last night of school before summer vacation. I don't think there's a better film out there for perfectly capturing the spirit/essence/feel of a specific moment. When I watch D&C I can feel the warm air, smell the heat, and hear the cricket in the background, and those three empty months open up before you. Ahh, memories. :)

This is yet another film to add to the massive list of 'Films everyone has seen apart from me' I am going to have to set aside a week or something and watch them all so I can join in on more conversations...

OK, well I might have to qualify my love by saying I first saw the film aged 12, when it first came out. And by saying that it's very American, and I grew up in the States and basically had that evening over and over throughout my teens. But in the '90s, obviously.

But the soundtrack is mega '70s rock, and it is just SO GOOD at capturing that sense of boundless freedom that you got on the first night of summer vacation.

WATCH IT.
