'Tis rapidly approaching the season for overblown consumerism and trying to work out what to buy to communicate that you like someone, but not enough to see them on such a regular basis that you know exactly what they want. Of course, it's all a bit easier when you're thinking about kids. There are so many cool and interesting toys out there. It's just a bit sad that their makers so often decree that they can only be played with by kids of a particular gender. First Kinder Egg broke our hearts by taking one of the best things in the world (chocolate and toys! Together!) and deciding toruin them. And then who knew that superheroes, or alarm clocks, were something only boys like? We reckon Lego had it right in the 70s, although maybe not so much now... But it's all got us reminiscing. What were the Squeamish team's favourite toys?

1. My favourite toy was one I had for about half an hour before it was cruelly taken away from me. It was the most amazing toy in the world and could have changed my life! I could be the world's most accomplished Keytar player by now if only my dad's last minute Toys R Us shopping had been more successful. He presented me with aJem and the Holograms Keytar, tape player come stage and dressing room combination - I KNOW! It was hot pink, had bits and bobs that made a stage and dressing table on the keytar and had a build in tape player that had some of rockstar cartoon Jem's finest songs on it. Alas there were a few bits missing so my dad insisted on taking it away even though I pleaded with him. He returned an hour later with a Sindy white wicker chair set with two sides cushion and a little plastic chocolate cake that sat on a glass surfaced table. That was not the same and I never forgot how close I was to owning my own frigging Keytar! Squeamish Nicola

2. The toy I wanted most as a kid sadly wasn't released until earlier this year. I'm talking, of course, about Benny's Spaceship Spaceship SPACESHIP! from the Lego Movie. A complete love letter to the 1978 Lego Space range, right down to the broken helmet on Benny (seriously those things broke if you so much as looked at them), and made entirely from bricks from that line (minus the custom movie minifigs obviously) it is my childhood repackaged and available to buy for the (bloody expensive) price of £69.99. Alternatively I could demand my mum returns the massive box of Lego she's still got stashed away and build it myself. She foolishly thinks that's been gifted to my niece and nephews, but she could not be more wrong. Gareth

3. I was trying to remember my favourite toys as a kid and realised how much of a nerd I was. I enjoyed the My Little Pony and the dolls, but the ones I really liked weren't toys so much as educational or hobby equipment. I had a rock polisher, which was amazing. I might have to buy myself one now, because who doesn't need jars full of shiny pebbles? And a flower press so that I could go out for long walks and pick flowers and then fill scrapbooks with them. That's not to mention how much I loved my encyclopaedias and dictionaries... Squeamish Louise

4. My favourite toy was Barbie. Shared with my sister I had a whole box full of Barbies, a Princess Laura, three Kens (one Rock Star) twoSkippers, a Sindy and her boyfriend Mouldy HeadPaul (he might not actually have been Sindy endorsed so much as from the 50p shop but Sindy got what she was given, that certainly wasn't his given name). Barbie drove around in our shoes, ran shops and dealt with Princess Laura's terrible flatulence (I don't think we had the respect for royalty that Mattel anticipated). My favourite joke was this: Knock knock. Who's there? Barbie. Barbie who? BARBIEANDKEN! Squeamish Kate
