Sue Perkins Radio Dilemma

Last night Squeamish Bikini went to a recording of new Radio 4 panel game Dilemma. The show’s premise seems to be the old Would You Rather game, good for whiling away car journeys when you tire of Name That Tune.

Sue Perkins hosts, making Dilemma stand out from a sea of male led panel games, or any show for that matter. This is a show that should make the diversity audit pay attention, sadly for that fact alone. But wait! There’s more!  Whilst in keeping with the one host, four guests format last night Dilemma deviated a little bit and had a ratio of three women to two men! And no-one imploded!

Whilst the show is based on a good idea, the development from fun pub diversion to fully fledged panel game is as yet…iffy. You know when the host forgets to award points that the format of the game is perhaps a little flawed. Guests are presented with a range of hypothetical scenarios ranging from car insurance fraud to cheating on a partner with a celebrity (who are we kidding, the answer’s yes!).

If it weren’t for Susan Calman’s quirky confessions and banter with Sue Perkins the show might not have worked at all. Guests Greg Proops, Louise Wener and Simon Evans seemed a little worried as to who might be listening. Their answers seemed to be influenced by legality and the potential wrath of their partners… Fortunately Calman had no such qualms. As the format is now, Dilemma definitely needs to have some good guests to prop up the show.

Dilemma airs this November on BBC Radio 4

Yeah, I wasn't impressed. Definitely not something I'd listen to if it was on the radio. Concept v flawed, especially with guests who - as you say - are afraid of listening loved ones.

Just thinking about other panel shows on Radio 4 with female presenters...

Obviously there was 99p Challenge which had Sue Perkins and is, in my view, one of the funniest things they ever produced.

The News Quiz has been hosted by Sandi Toksvig for a while now and often has more women on it than men (if you include the host).

Heresy is presented by Vicotria Coren and usually has a good mix of people on it, though they have a lot of non-comedians on as well.

Hmmm.... I'm running out of panel shows to name. Any others good ones to to listen to?

The biggest 'all male' panel show I can think of is I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. As far as I can tell that's because three of the positions are filled with regulars which doesn't allow for them much rotation.

Radio 4 definitely leads the way on allowing more women on to panel shows I think, but the BBC seems to currently just rotate Jo Brand, Sandi Toksvig, Sue Perkins and Victoria Coren (who are all excellent)and rarely are they allowed on a show all together.

Just a Minute usually has all men or they have Sue Perkins/Sheila Hancock.

I remember the 99p Challenge, it never got beyond one series though did it?

Apparently in the year and half since Clement died, Just a Minute has had 11 women on the show, for a total of 72 (!!!) appearances between them. That's not bad -- in fact, it's far more than any other panel game I can think of (with the possible exception of The News Quiz, which generally is 50% female, not counting Sandi).

If you're curious about the breakdown, check it out here:

Sue Perkins leads the pack, but Sheila Hancock isn't even in the top three, in terms of appearances (she's tied for fourth place). There are perhaps a lot more women on JAM than you're aware of.
