Oh Phone App! Up Yours!

The latest smart phone app to cause a stir is the X-Ray augmented reality app for clothing retailer Moosejaw. Using either an iPad or smart phone camera with the Moosejaw catalogue images, users are granted ‘x-ray’ vision to see beneath the model’s Moosejaw puffa jackets and hoodies.

So far the app has been downloaded 75,000 times in 5 weeks. Moosejaw credits the app with a 37% boost in sales.

Such an app could be useful for those who prefer online shopping. Asos, the popular online clothing shop already mentions what size the model pictured is wearing. The knowledge a dress is best worn with a strapless bra or that the model is wearing massive pants could be held up as useful.

Gary Wohlfeill, Creative Director at Moosejaw, chooses not to bother with such justification: “It's…very much about seeing people in their underwear, something we're constantly prioritising at Moosejaw”.

However, having watched a video of the X-Ray augmented reality app in action I now know that a satin push up bra and matching knickers are best worn under a thick woollen jumper and jeans.

For now the app only works in conjunction with Moosejaw. For shoppers at Hollister such an app is not necessary and it’s hard to know what you’d get were the X-Ray augmented reality app to be used on an H&M image.

... I don't understand, what exactly is the purpose of this?

It replaces a picture of a model fully dressed with a picture of the same model in her (lets be real, its going to be her) underwear.

And it's on the internet. Like, if you want to look at pictures of models in their underwear, why not just go to a shop that sells 'underwear' I mean, you're already on THE INTERNET... it's not like your going to be stared at by the shop attendants for hanging around in the lingerie section of M&S. For that matter if you just want to look at pictures of naked people I'm pretty sure you'll be able to find that too.

Why on earth go to all the trouble of looking at a picture of a model on a website on your computer screen through a different picture of the same model on a phone app on your mobile device? I mean, web 2.0 (is a myth) and all that but this just seems like a needlessly complicated way of achieving very very little.

I think it just satisfies a voyeuristic urge, and it's vaguely amusing.
When the model's already posing in her underwear it is like you have her permission, this way is a bit more... naughty.

Did you see the man one? Are his boxers being held up with braces?
