How Tolerant Porn is changing attitudes

Porn. It’s the big subject Western feminists have, depending on your stance, the luxury to bicker over or the calling to destroy all forms of it. Recently there has been a lot of concern that young people’s first exposure to sex is porn, which they use in lieu of proper sex education at school or from their parents. It’s possible this causes huge misunderstanding about bodies and creates…expectations. It’s been blamed for sexting (I blame phones) among teens and causing greater anxiety over body issues. Many people find it just plain offensive.

Maybe we would all like some good porn related news. Yeah? Yeah. According to a study at Indiana University watching porn (any porn) makes heterosexual men more tolerant of the idea of equal marriage. If you don’t think that is good news, perhaps you should go watch a little porn. Right now. You’re online, it’s pretty hard to avoid. I’ll wait.

Ok.

Here’s the questionable sciencey part! The study of 500 heterosexual men over the last 6 years found that the consumption of pornography “did predict over-time increases in support for same-sex marriage”

Indiana University found that heteronormative men, when exposed to porn, became more open to the idea of same-sex people getting married, or having a civil union. Could porn be the homophobia cure we’ve all been searching for?

Indiana University Assistant Professor Paul Wright said: “Our study suggests that the more heterosexual men, especially less educated heterosexual men, watch pornography, the more supportive they become of same-sex marriage.”
Why, when there is no wedding porn (or is there? My knowledge of porn is scant) and the line ‘Long-term commitment gets me hot’ has yet to replace innuendo regarding plumbers and pipes (my knowledge of plumbing is scant) is porn helping men foster more liberal attitudes? Apparently it’s all about the lack of judgement in porn.

30% of all online traffic is pornography...Gosh, that gay agenda is wily

The study was published in the Communication Research journal, explaining the findings Wright said: “Pornography adopts an individualistic, non-judgmental stance on all kinds of non-traditional sexual behaviours and same-sex marriage attitudes are strongly linked to attitudes about same-sex sex. If people think individuals should be able to decide for themselves whether to have same-sex sex, they will also think that individuals should be able to decide for themselves whether to get married to a partner of the same-sex.”

Interested in the idea that sexual attitudes are partially influenced by media the study noted that among the men who took part there was a preference for lesbian porn. The change in opinion about same sex couples regarded the union of two men in marriage.

Considering that 30% of all online traffic is, apparently, pornography equal marriage should soon be legal all over the internet-using Western world. Gosh, that gay agenda is wily.

Is it interesting to think of the influence of porn on attitudes towards various aspects of life. For instance we know the reduction of pubic hair is linked to porn star grooming preferences. A ‘porn culture’ has been blamed for young teenager’s sexual precocity.

I wonder how much this new found tolerance for same sex marriage actually has to do with general moving on and modernity. Rather like that time when we all decided the idea of a man with the vote and control of his estate marrying a piece of property was a little iffy. We changed that right? Right?

How anyone could look at any mainstream porn site and think that there is a 'lack of judgement in porn' is beyond my comprehension.

Interesting study, but I do have a couple of problems with their interpretation from looking at their data.

First, although statistically significant, adding porn/no porn to their stats model changed R squared by 0.01, which means it accounted for only 1% of the variance in attitude towards same sex marriage.

Second, attitude to same sex marriage was scored on a five point scale from 1-strongly disagree, 2-diagree, 3-neutral, 4-agree 5-strongly agree. Average scores were just above 1 for low education, no porn, and around 2 for low education watched porn, and both high education groups. So despite porn watching being associated with a slight increase in positive attitude to same sex marriage, all groups, whether they watched porn or not were pretty anti it.
