Brargh Wars

This is a pre-teen bra
I think almost every woman has the same story. One day, they came home from school to be greeted by their mother. “There’s something on your bed for you.” And there it is. You don’t have to look inside the BHS/M&S plastic bag to guess that what’s burning a hole through it is a 28 AAA white bra.

Growing up is a cringe-worthy business. Anything that can be done to make the transition from girl to woman any easier is welcome. After the PR disaster that was the BHS Little Miss pre-teen padded bras (BHS, I just don’t think the Daily Mail is ever going to let that go) Tesco has designed a new preteen bra, Fleur First.

And this is a pre-teen brargh
Described by the Daily Mail as ‘modest’ the bras have been designed in conjunction with Mumsnet. I am looking at a picture of the bra now (yes linked here, I won’t link to Daily Mail but I will link to Tesco. I am a capricious linker). It’s not padded, it’s not lacy, it’s not going to lift and separate any time soon. It looks suspiciously like a crop top with a v neck. Crop tops are not known for providing support.

Looking at the BHS forbidden bra and looking at the Tesco modest bra I can’t help but think I’d rather give poor Little Miss Early Developer the bra that looks like it would actually provide the kid with some support. The stupid thing is wearing the BHS bra would give a young girl with boobs the freedom to continue to run around like a child ought to.

And this is where I get irritated. Look Daily Mail, if girl needs a bra let the poor thing wear a freakin’ bra. In the unlikely event my hypothetical daughter develops early I will not insist my 9 year old  wangs around unfettered, taking fellow 9 year olds eyes out in the playground as she shows off her mad skillz at skipping rope.

Whatever happened to training bras? They WERE just short crop tops, more designed for modesty and support and when I was about 11 everyone had one (well, all the girls). I got mine second-hand off my cousin...

I didn't have one, or I had some but I never wore them because they would ride up over my absence of bust. Crop tops and vests were ridiculously uncomfortable.

Yeah I was THAT girl in the Year 7/8 changing room... ARGH NIPPLE!
