When on occasion I am called upon the defend women only awards, such as The Orange Prize, I shall cite the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2011 Awards and now the Bafta's Rising Star 2012 shortlist.
Both are open to men and women and both have recently had men only shortlists. The Bafta Rising Star long list comprised of the following actors;
Adam Deacon (Kidulthood and Adulthood), Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids), Eddie Redmayne (My Week With Marilyn), Tom Hiddleston (War Horse) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor).

The shortlist was decided by industry names including Simon Pegg and Sienna Miller, the producer Pippa Harris and director David Yates. The Help’s Jessica Chastain, Like Crazy’s Felicity Jones and Jennifer Lawrence of Winter’s Bone were dropped from the original list of 8.
The Bafta Rising Star award was launched in 2006 to honour of Mary Selway, the British casting director who died in 2004. Selway worked on a wide range of films including 1988’s Dian Fossey biopic, Gorillas in the Mist and 2001’s Gosford Park.
It seems a shame someone known for a “reputation for fairness, determination, charm, wisdom and irreverence” and involved in films that had fantastic female characters should be remembered by an all-male list.
Previous winners have been Tom Hardy 2011, Kristen Stewart 2010 and Noel Clarke 2009. Last year’s short list consisted of 2 women, Gemma Arterton and Emma Stone.
